Course Overview

This 6-session masterclass is based on the book titled, Linking Sensory Integration and Mental Health: Nurturing Self-Regulation in Infants and Young Children by Susan Stallings-Sahler and Gilbert M. Foley.

This masterclass aims to synthesize theoretical concepts, scientific evidence, and practical, insightful applications for identification and DIR-related interventions in clinics, classrooms, and daily life of infants and young children with sensory processing and mental health risks and disorders.

The occupational therapy/sensory integration and infant and early childhood mental health and DIR perspectives are paralleled and integrated with the aim of illuminating linkages between sensation and mentation, soma and psyche. This masterclass delves into the sensory systems and their contributions to regulation, attachment, anxiety, behavior and adaptive functioning. When these systems fail to process incoming sensation effectively and efficiently, the sequelae of expanding mental health consequences from infant to family and from daily environments to institutional adjustment will be examined.

A case-based interactive approach focused on planning and implementing effective intervention will be incorporated throughout. Participants are encouraged to bring case material for analysis and problem solving.
