Whether you work in schools, clinics, homes, or are currently seeking to learn more, this comprehensive, engaging and interactive certificate course will equip you with the understanding and information needed to implement the core components of the DIR model—Development, Individual Differences, and Relationships, creating a supportive, nurturing environment for children’s growth and development. You’ll learn the importance of parent-child relationships and how DIR relates to neurodivergence, developmental differences, behavior, and culture. Emphasis will be placed on fostering a welcoming, inclusive learning community that encourages you to apply DIR thinking in your everyday work.

Paraprofessionals play a vital role in the growth and development of children with a wide range of abilities. Supporting the unique role of paraprofessionals in clinical and educational settings, we’ll focus on deepening understanding of the DIR model and applying its core principles, providing a guiding light into child development. Additionally, you will learn skills and strategies that will transform your work into a more relational, affirming, and integrated practice.

The course also covers the dynamics of working on a transdisciplinary team and highlights the unique role each service provider plays in supporting development through relationship-based practice. Finally, you will engage in critical self-reflection and examine your own experience providing care for children and families, welcoming in a new understanding about who we are and the impact we make.

Criteria to take the course

Applicants need to have a high school diploma and must be able to commit to the planned time frame. Unlike other Profectum certificate programs, applicants for the paraprofessional course are not required to hold university or college degrees. Clinical or educational licenses, certifications, or credentials are also not required.

How much time will I need to spend on the course

The paraprofessional course is a 10 week program. Live online classes meet for 90 minutes each via Zoom.

What are the requirements to receive a certificate

The following criteria must be met in order to receive a certificate at the end of this course. These criteria should be monitored throughout the course.

  • Attendance: No more than two absences to the online classes during the course. Each missed online class is expected to be viewed via Zoom recording, and impressions/comments shared with the instructor in writing to be considered a "make up" of the content missed.
  • Contribute to online class discussions
  • Use technology as required by instructors: Camera is on for class, use the Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Homework: All homework assignments must be completed and turned in. Missed homework must be completed before taking the end of course exam
  • Exam: Successful completion of exam with a score of no less than 80%.


IMPORTANT NOTE: Certification does not imply endorsement of clinical competency. As a paraprofessional, you are responsible for reviewing the scope of practice, including activities defined as beyond the boundaries of practice in accordance with and in compliance with your employer's and profession’s standards.

Payment, withdrawal and refund policy

Payment is due in full before the course begins.

If you submit payment and withdraw from this course at least 10 working days (Mon-Fri) BEFORE the start date, you will receive a refund minus the non-refundable deposit and a cancellation fee of $25. If requests to withdraw are received after this time, no refund is given and you are responsible for full payment of the course.

Requests to withdraw must be sent via email to training@profectum.org.

Under certain circumstances, you may be able to begin training again with a group scheduled at a later date, but the course payment is still due as scheduled for the initial group registration.

In the event that a course group is canceled, you will be notified immediately via email and a credit will be issued toward a rescheduled course group or the entire submitted fee will be refunded without further liability on the part of the organizer.

Cancelation policy

We strive to accommodate start times and international time zones for our participants and, therefore, reserve the right to adjust course start dates and times as needed. A minimum number of participants are required to run each course group. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone a scheduled group if the required number of participants is not achieved.

Technology requirements

Profectum uses video streaming and video conferencing as our standard technology tools. The course relies on you watching webcasts on your own and joining live online class discussions using Zoom.

A computer with a monitor, keyboard, and a mouse or a laptop. (Please note that the course is not fully supported on mobile devices such as phones and tablets.)

Speakers, either built into your computer or external (plugged into your computer).

Camera, either built into your computer or external (plugged into your computer).

An internet connection, either wired or wireless, DSL or better

The course is supported on the most recent versions of Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, as well as Internet Explorer 11 and Edge. Please note that the course is incompatible with Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9, and 10. We recommend using only a single tab on your browser.
